Groundbreaking study finds that the consumption of wealthy nations is driving biodiversity loss and wild animal extinction far beyond borders. Researchers from Princeton University assessed the impacts of 24 developed countries on 7,593 species of forest-dependent birds, mammals, and reptiles. Rich nations’ consumer habits drive 13.5% of deforestation
The study found that consumer habits strongly drive extinction. The consumption habits of 24 nations drive 13.3% of all deforestation with negative impacts on forest vertebrates.
Between 2001 and 2015, USA, China, Germany, France and the UK imported commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, coffee soy, beef, and timber led to widespread deforestation in biodiversity-rich regions, particularly in the global south.

Countries tend to have the largest impact on tropical regions geographically closest to them, but global trade networks mean distant ecosystems are also at risk.

The authors call for urgent international cooperation to address these global consequences, including stronger regulations on commodity supply chains and support for indigenous-led solutions to environmental challenges. They warn that without meaningful action, the world risks accelerating the loss of irreplaceable biodiversity and undermining efforts to halt deforestation.
