Kinkajou Potos flavus

Locations: Kinkajous thrive in forests from southern and eastern Mexico (east and south of the Sierra Madre), through Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, and south to Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador, the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, and Amazonian regions. These animals live in the thick tree canopy of mature and secondary rainforests, tropical dry and moist forests, gallery forests, and sometimes plantations across the Neotropics.

The kinkajou, also known as the “honey bear,” is a tropical rainforest mammal with deep ties to the canopy of Central and South America. Kinkajous belong to the raccoon family, making them close relatives of olinguitos, coatis, and the ringtail—but interestingly, the kinkajou is the only member of their genus and not closely related to other tree-dwelling mammals like primates. Strictly nocturnal, these “night walkers” are known for being elusive and rarely seen by people. Kinkajous help keep rainforests alive by pollinating flowers and spreading seeds as they forage.

Expert climbers with impressive prehensile tails

Kinkajous have thick coats coloured anywhere from tawny olive to wood brown, sometimes with a black dorsal stripe, and paler yellow undersides. Their prehensile tail is fully furred and acts like a fifth hand as they climb and forage. Sharp claws and a very long tongue allow them to reach nectar and fruit. Females are generally smaller than males.

While once thought solitary, research shows complex social groups can form, usually a female with two males and younger kinkajous, sharing sleeping dens and grooming. They frequently feed alone but gather in large fruit trees, where food is abundant and competition drops. Scent glands at the mouth, throat, and abdomen mark territories and travel paths.

Palm oil, soy and meat expansion, especially in Central and South America, removes critical habitat, leaving kinkajou populations scattered and vulnerable (Daryono, 2025).

Capture for the illegal pet trade and hunting

Exposure to light and noise causes distress for kinkajous. Also cramped cages lead to sickness and aggression. Pups are often taken from mothers to supply this trade. The fur trade also targets kinkajous for their soft pelts, catastrophically destroying family groups and causing further population declines (Block & Amundson, 2024).

Deforestation for road building and infrastructure

Deforestation for roads, logging, and plantations leaves some populations isolated, with less genetic diversity and fewer opportunities to find mates. Camera trapping research in Ecuador and Colombia shows that kinkajous are active the entire night but often found alone or rarely in pairs, making the impact on solitary individuals even greater (Galvis et al., 2024).

Changing rainfall patterns, droughts and increasing temperatures affect fruit production and forest health, directly impacting kinkajou diets and breeding. As the forest climate shifts, food becomes less predictable, and kinkajous have less ability to adapt, especially in small forest remnants (Charles-Dominique et al., 1981; Galvis et al., 2024).

Expansion of mining in Central and South American forests causes direct habitat destruction and pollution. Tree cover loss from gold, oil, and mineral extraction leaves rainforests with bare, toxic ground where recovery is slow. Kinkajou habitat

Kinkajous are found from southern Mexico, throughout Central America, and into Amazonian Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia. They persist in intact and disturbed forests but are now at risk in areas cleared for palm oil or cattle, as fragmented forests make survival harder.

Kinkajou diet

Fruit makes up the majority of the kinkajou diet, with figs, melons, bananas, grapes, and mangos most common. Although they have been known to also eat nectar, berries, leaves, bugs, honey, birds, and eggs. Honey bears are important pollinators, with their feeding and movement disperse seeds and pollen for dozens of rainforest plants.

Mating and reproduction

Kinkajous mate frequently and both males and females have multiple partners. Most groups have a single breeding female, but males often mate with females outside the group, making the system promiscuous. Litter size is usually one, sometimes two, after a pregnancy of 98–120 days. For the first weeks, the pup is carried everywhere by the mother.
